Description

Tauba Auerbach’s painting series, Folds, is shown here for the first time in book form. Making these paintings, Auerbach twists and folds the canvas, then irons or presses it flat before spray-painting it. The result, after the paint has dried and the canvas has been stretched, is an almost perfect registration of the previous three-dimensional form of the surface. The dizzying, op-art-minded result conjures a kind of trompe l’oeil – not unlike traditional mimetic painting, but in this case based on inventive handling of materials rather than painterly virtuosity. Auerbach interweaves disorder and order, readability and abstraction, permeability and solidity, into surprisingly unified surfaces and volumes. This exhibition catalog accompanies Auerbach’s solo exhibition at the Ursula Blickle Stiftung, Germany.
