Description

Oliver Hartung traveled between 2007 – 2009 in the Middle East and photographed in Syria signs and monuments that were erected in honor of the ruling Assad regime since 1971. His book “Syria al-Assad” is a loose typology of those once ubiquitous objects loyal regime propaganda that were loved and hated in the population, and the visual culture in Syria strongly specific. Those signs that Oliver Hartung usually recorded from a moving car, are now trapped in the fighting and there are probably no longer so. In his book, all photos will appear on the right side, which is perforated and you can separate out like a demolition calendar. Image and text can be considered separately, read and re-assembled. The Arabic inscriptions of the signs are translated into English.
