Description

Adad Hannah uses photography, video, installation and performance to generate the still image. His videos are presented in a fixed manner and from a frontal perspective, with skillfully constructed and orchestrated scenes in which participants take part in various activities staged by the artist. Often developing his projects over numerous months or years, doing intensive research and working with large groups of participants through community workshops, Hannah’s staged images draw on references ranging from celebrated historical paintings and sculptures to everyday lives. This exhibition catalogue features key works that define the narrative of Hannah’s artistic practice. In these varied bodies of work Hannah explores seriality, repetition, recovery, duplication, reflection, the copy and visual citation.

Adad Hannah’s works have been exhibited at the National Gallery of Canada, Vancouver Art Gallery, Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, Zendai MoMA (Shanghai), Ikon Gallery (UK), and the 4th Seoul International Media Art Biennial. His works are found in numerous public and private collections, notably, The National Gallery of Canada, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, BMO Financial Group and the Royal Bank of Canada. Born in New York in 1971, Adad Hannah studied in Montreal, and now lives and works in Vancouver.

Lindsey V. Sharman is curator of the Art Gallery of Alberta and adjunct professor in the Department of Art at the University of Calgary. Lynn Bannon is associate professor in the Department of Art History at the Université du Québec à Montréal.

Published to accompany the exhibitions Glints and Reflections, initiated by Musée d’art de Joliette and touring nationally (Kamloops Art Gallery, Southern Alberta Art Gallery, Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery, The Rooms), and Gassed Redux at The Founders’ Gallery, University of Calgary. The book is co-published by these six institutions. In English and French.
