Antoni Muntadas (sometimes referred to simply as Muntadas) is a multidisciplinary installation and media artist. An early pioneer of video art in the early to mid 1970s, he later expanded his practice to also incorporate installation environments for his films and photographs, exploring the hegemonic factors at play when one is seeing or looking at art in gallery or museum settings.
In On Translation: Strand, Muntadas presents a series of photographs of the signage in New York City’s iconic Strand Bookstore. He explains, “After having paid many visits to Strand since 1971, I visited it again recently, in the spring of 2015, and took new photographs of the place as it is now refurbished…Its old and new cataloguing process is an exercise in the translation and understanding of subject matters, books and finally audiences.” This small book collects these photographs, printing them in full bleeds on both sides of the paper, creating a collage of the various categorizations of books.
