Karla Read does not seek to simply capture events with her camera: she provokes what she finds. Subtly staging a wide range of nuanced and disquieting situations, her work places us in the in-between, in that grey fluid space where life actually unfolds.

Her compositions are located far from the city, as if existing in the margins. They are a reflection of an inner world that takes shape in nature. Her images do not shine with a “local” brightness. They are of a subdued tropicality, tinted with a hint of smoky black ink.
Intimately photographed, faces appear to be watching us from afar, or else lost in their own thoughts. Bodies stretched out in a serenity, sensual or meditative, are like islands getting ready to drift. Couples meet in a time and space parallel to ours, with no witnesses other than a curtain of trees. Dream-like photos, subjects caught dreaming with eyes wide open.

Present and naked, bodies hide as much as they reveal. The physical evidence of skin, of arms outstretched towards someone, contrast with the indeterminacy of the situations which we are viewing. Desire, intimacy and love can be experienced at times like crystal clear water. Those very same seemingly transparent moments can also be obscured by the darkness of the deepest nights.

Karla Read (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, 1988) is a photographer based in Santo Domingo. After studying in Argentina, she returned to the Dominican Republic where she pursues her photographic exploration of the human body, immersing her models in the varied landscapes of the tropics.
