Echoes is an artist book conceptualized by Meera Margaret Singh during an artist residency at the Art Gallery of Ontario. The book began as an investigation into the gallery’s historic collections, a search that focused on three distinct categories: Women and Strength, Women Overcome by Emotion, and Motherhood.
Pairing 31 works in the AGO’s collection with Singh’s contemporary photographic works resulted in this series of uncanny parallels and unexpected dialogues. Each of these pairings create new and altered meanings within and between each of the historic and contemporary works.
Echoes features a compelling essay by Suzanne Carte, curator and cultural producer currently working at the Art Gallery of York University.
