Description

New York-based photographer, Laurie Simmons uses dolls, the archetypal little girl’s toy, to launch a powerful critique of the social norms of femininity and gender stereotypes.

Charlesworth: “We were raised, in a way, to be housewives, and in your early pictures there are women bending over an oven. It’s been interpreted historically as feminist critique. Yet, when you really look at the pictures, it’s not clear whether you’re criticizing women’s role or fantasizing about them. It’s almost as if both things are being done at once.”
