In her multi-channel video works, internationally acclaimed artist Candice Breitz investigates how both our senses of self and our relations with others are shaped by media culture. This catalogue accompanies her first major survey exhibition in North America, organized by The Power Plant in fall 2009. Featuring celebrated projects from 2000– 2009, the exhibition also premiered works from the new commission Factum (2009), a series of video portraits featuring seven sets of identical twins and one set of identical triplets. Named for Robert Rauschenberg’s almost-identical combine paintings of 1957, Factum I and Factum II, this work builds on Breitz’s ongoing fascination with original and copy and the performance of identity.
‘Candice Breitz: Same Same’ features an extensive section on Factum (2009) as well as illustrations of key works from Breitz’s oeuvre: Him + Her (1968-2008), Legend (A Portrait of Bob Marley) (2005), Becoming (2003), and Four Duets (2000). Includes essays by Gregory Burke, art historian Anne Wagner, Jon Davies and Claire Gilman.
