In her first book, illustrator Jillian Tamaki collects two of her larger projects; City of Champions, her “stream-of-consciousness ode to the city of post-Gretzky Edmonton” and The Tapemines, an 80 page wordless scroll about feral children in forests of cassette tape. Also included are dozens of illustrations by her for such publications as the New York Times, Entertainment Weekly, CBC and The New Yorker. Inspired by Georg Grosz and Otto Dix, as well as Japanese and Inuit printmaking, Tamaki has an uncanny ability to find the beautiful in the grotesque, and the grotesque in the beautiful.
