In this book, you’ll find intentions, ideas, learnings and outcomes developed throughout the making of the ALT-R.
The ALT-R is a cultural inquiry and design exploration that asks: How are first and second generation immigrants’ inherited spiritual practices shaped by where they live? What new beliefs and practices emerge? What traditions remain? Can these be integrated into everyday life and honoured through design? Can an object encourage or prompt rituals of prayer and reflection? How can communing with ancestors and the non-physical world help us to exist more meaningfully with one another?
This project is led by GIALOC, a collective design studio exploring how belonging can be intentionally rebuilt into modern life. GIALOC creates gatherings, artifacts and philosophy that challenge systems of connection and reimagine interdependence. These offerings are a result of shared inquiry, research and collaborative practices.
