An artist’s book combining literature and graphic design, Deux cent soixante-quatorze personnages is a collection of characters. With minimal poetry—the meeting of a first name and a last name—this chaotic inventory gathers improbable figures, invented or real, encountered by the author or borrowed from popular culture. Each page unfolds a beginning and a punchline, giving rise to a play on words or sounds, a lively encounter between heterogeneous cultural elements.
Modest in size yet imposing, Deux cent soixante-quatorze personnages is a singular object, a book of rare craftsmanship, entirely printed in gold ink—pages, edges, cover, and spine. Through its deliberately material presence, the object invites the reader to hold it, leaf through it, and keep it, like the most solemn of breviaries. The layout and graphic design were created by Criterium, a graphic design studio based in Québec City.
