Waiting out the Storm’ is a series of 3 similar oil paintings completed on primed Arches watercolour paper of the same subject. A skeleton wreathed in a boa waiting out a winter’s storm underneath a rocking horse. This edition explores the pedagogy of a studio learning environment. From shared subject matter, new painters explore their understanding of paint and materiality while navigating the storms of their minds. The skeleton is a call back to academic study but framed with humour. Perhaps the fear of the storm has caused them to stay in a place of comfort rather than adventuring into new lands.
“Spot the difference between these artifacts of excess! To train the hand by mantra, the heart by memory. Here is the ion pump of pedagogy, goin’ back back and forth forth to produce copies as their students might.”
