Description

There is a continuity in the work that nichola feldman-kiss has produced over the last 15 years, reflected in the survey exhibition witness presented at the Ottawa Art Gallery. A powerful examination of identity, embodiment, relational experience and traumatic memory, the works in witness tell stories of personal, cultural, and historical confict.

Born in Ottawa, Ontario—her Bajan father, a refugee of the Nazi program, and her mother of diverse heritage characteristic of Jamaica’s colonial history— feldman-kiss anchors her work in autobiography and experiential research. She earned a BFA in Photography from the University of Ottawa in 1991 and an MFA in Photography/Art and Critical Studies from the California Institute of Arts in 1996. Influenced by critical theory, her practice has since transitioned into a model of practice-led research— a methodology informed by the concept that making art produces and disseminates knowledge.

Since 2001, feldman-kiss’s performative interventions and collaborations have earned the support of many governing bodies of research, including the National Research Council of Canada (2000–01, 2004–06); the Ottawa Hospital Eye Institute (2008) and the Canadian Forces in collaboration with the United Nations peacekeeping mission in Sudan (2010–11).

Alexandra Badzak, Director and CEO Ottawa Art Gallery 2015
