An Echo Without a Medium examines the German architect Ernst May and
the complex legacies of his work in colonial Kenya from 1933-1953, parsing
the relationship between his architectural logic and political dislocation. Through
photographs, video, sculpture and text, three of May’s designs come under consideration:
a failed prototype for pre-fabricated housing, an apartment complex in downtown Nairobi,
and a now-demolished resort hotel in the Kenyan coastal city of Mombasa.
