“Art’s Birthday” was first proposed in 1963 by French artist Robert Filliou. He suggested that 1,000,000 years ago, there was no art. But one day, on January 17th to be precise, Art was born. Filliou says it happened when someone dropped a dry sponge into a bucket of water. Modest beginnings, but look at us now!
The “birthday song” was produced on Saturday, January 17, 2004, in honour of art’s birthday. Calgary based laptop group EMMAX (Ken Buera & Don Simmons) produce this song in honour of Art’s birthday, at the New Gallery in Calgary, Alberta.
Utilizing live conversations in the gallery, phone messages, and streamed audio from the internet, EMMAX remixed the ambience of a local celebration.
