Catalogue of a 1969 exhibition held at the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.
The ‘Hairy Who’ was the name of a loose collective of Chicago-based artists who exhibited together throughout the mid-to-late 1960s. These artists included Jim Nutt, Gladys Nilsson, James Falconer, Art Green, Suellen Rocca and Karl Wirsum.
The work of the ‘Hairy Who’ artists who were closely associated with Chicago’s Hyde Park Art Center (HPAC), was described as grotesque, Art Brut and surreal. They attracted critical attention due to their seeming disinterest in and deviation from the New York art world trends of the period such as Pop Art.
