The Centre For Near Life Research first took the form of a nomadic research station within contaminated waters. The Centre followed in the wake of queer theorist Eric A. Stanley’s proclimation that trans life was a “death-in-waiting,” overdetermined by the atmospheres of violence that envelop us. The Centre reclaims this negative position as a generative opening: if trans life is a death-in-waiting, what can we learn from making kin in the underworld?
In 2023 and 2024, the Centre hosted social practice workshops on xʷməm̓qʷe:m bog on unceded Musqueam territory (colonially known as Vancouver, Canada). Early outcomes were collected in the Centre for Near Lift Reader in 2023, published by Dane Press.
