Art Metropole initiated an art intervention as part of their contribution to this year’s Toronto Art Fair. This business-like art action for the new e-commerce era was enacted at the fair by Julie Voyce, Sally McKay, Ben Lea Smith, John Marriott, Alex Snukal and Pete Gazendam. Another super-brilliant idea from the divine staff at Art Metropole.


Julie Voyce was born in 1957 in Woodstock, Ontario. She Studied at the Ontario College of Art and Design, Toronto. Since the early 1980s, she has shown her work extensively in Canada and has had exhibitions in the United States, the United Kingdom, Russia and Italy. Her practice has been documented in writings and exhibition catalogues by Art Gallery of Mississauga, Mississauga, Ontario; Art Gallery of Hamilton, Hamilton, Ontario; University of Waterloo Art Gallery, Waterloo, Ontario and Struts Gallery, Sackville, New Brunswick. Her work is included in numerous private and public collections including those of The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Montreal; Art Gallery of Mississauga, Mississauga and Osler Hoskin and Harcourt, Toronto. In addition to drawing, painting and printmaking, Voyce has engaged in several book and mail art projects, often collaboratively. In 2004, she was awarded Artist of the Year Award by the by the Untitled Art Awards in Toronto. She lives and works in Toronto, Ontario.

Sally McKay is an independent curator, artist and art writer. Pursuing a long-term exploration into the connects and disconnects between art and science, she is currently researching neuroaesthetics for her PhD program in Art History and Visual Culture at York University in Toronto. Her art writing has been published in the Globe and Mail, Canadian Art, Flash Art, Fuse Magazine, C Magazine and various other publications including exhibition catalogues and curatorial essays.

From 1997-2003 she was co-owner/editor of the Toronto art magazine Lola with Catherine Osborne. Recent curatorial projects include the touring group show Quantal Strife (2006-2008), Woodlot: The Third Kitchener Waterloo Art Gallery Biennial (2007) and Mods and Rockers, curated for digifest and Harbourfront Center in Toronto (2006). In 2008, McKay held a three-week curatorial residency at Open Space in Victoria, BC. She is currently curating Too Cool For School, an art and science fair and exhibition scheduled for 2010 as part of Fresh Ground New Works, Harbourfront Center’s national commissioning program.

John Marriott is a Vancouver-born artist who lives and works in Toronto. Since 1995 he has been active as a writer, curator, and artist working in video, installation, performance and urban interventions. His works have been seen in publications, exhibitions and screenings nationally and internationally. In 1996 his sculptural installations were presented in a solo exhibition at the Powerplant Contemporary Art Gallery in Toronto, and most recently his video Vegetative States (done in collaboration with Steve Reinke) screened at the International Festival of Film and Video in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.His performances, interventions, videos, installations, sculptures and images have been featured in exhibitions and festivals nationally and internationally in venues such as The Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery (Toronto 1995, 1996), The Impakt Festival (Utrecht, 2003), 25HRS (Barcelona, 2003), The Rotterdam International Festival of Film and Video (Rotterdam, 2003), The 7a*lld International Festival of Performance Art (Toronto, 2004), The ZKM (Karlsruhe, 2004), The Toronto Sculpture Garden (Toronto, 2006), Optica – un centre d’art contemporain (Montréal, 2011) and The Blackwood Gallery (Mississauga, 2011, 2013).

Peter Gazendam’s work includes sculpture, photography, video, sound, installation and drawing. His practice is a research based, critical investigation into the historical and cultural legacies of the creation and reception of objects. Gazendam is specifically concerned with the allegorical and metaphorical possibilities of material and form in tension with their contextual framework. He has been exhibited both nationally and internationally including Diaz Contemporary, Wynick/Tuck Gallery, Mercer Union, Gallery TPW and Art Metropole. He received a BFA from the University of Guelph in 2001 and an MFA from the University of Victoria in 2008. He is the former Associate Director of the Ydessa Hendeles Art Foundation and current Programme Coordinator for Artspeak, Vancouver.
