Wouldn't it be nice?

Rolls of packing tape with the text “Wouldn’t it be nice?, from the Beach Boys song, were produced by Toronto artist Derek Sullivan as part of his 2003 exhibition at Mercer Union.

In an effort to promote art outside of the traditional gallery and museum systems, Art Metropole frequently incorporates artists’ projects in public mailers. As part of this effort and in order to extend the reach of Sullivan’s project, Art Metropole began using his tape on all outgoing parcels shipped to our customers.

Sullivan received his B.F.A. from York University in 1999 and is currently working at Susan Hobbs Gallery. He was born just a little north of Toronto, a block west of Yonge Street. His work was most recently shown in a solo exhibition at Mercer Union. In the past few years he has been included in exhibitions in Toronto, Vancouver and Shanghai. The MacDonald-Stewart Art Centre in Guelph has commissioned Sullivan to do a permanent public work to be installed this autumn. Derek is currently exhibiting at YYZ, 401 Richmond Street West, Ste. 140, until October 18, 2003.

Derek Sullivan was born in 1976 in Richmond Hill, Ontario. He received a BFA from York University and an MFA from the University of Guelph. His multiple National Gallery Catalogue 2004 was included in the exhibition Art Metropole The Top 100 at the National Gallery of Canada (2007). Recently his work was featured in the group exhibitions We Can Do This Now at The Power Plant in Toronto (2007) and Gasoline Rainbows at the Contemporary Art Gallery in Vancouver (2007). He is represented by Jessica Bradley Art + Projects, Toronto.
