Flipping Properties is the continuation of an ongoing study of super-furnitures by architect, Jimenez Lai, and the team of Bureau Spectacular. Commissioned by Rear View (Projects), the project will exist in two Toronto sites during Summer 2014. The Art Metropole window exhibit displays remnants from Lai’s design process including a miniaturized architectural mock-up and sketches of the cartoon world from which his theories originate. The project’s second iteration is an installation in a laneway located a short stroll from Art Metropole (opening July 11, 2014). Flipping Properties takes the familiar house icon (the pentagon) and the drawing convention of oblique projection as starting points for the design. Separate pieces of the installation tumble and relocate within the laneway creating an unconventional place for neighbours to gather and imagine the possibility of an architecture that can rotate and reorient infinitely.

Jimenez Lai is an Assistant Professor of Architecture at University of Illinois at Chicago and Leader of Bureau Spectacular. Since graduating from the University of Toronto, he has published his first manifesto, Citizens of No Place, and has been collected by the MoMA and the New Museum. In 2012 he was named a winner to the Architectural League for Young Architects in New York and will represent Taiwan in the 2014 Venice Architectural Biennale.

Rear View (Projects is Jennifer Davis, an architectural practitioner, and Su-Ying Lee, a contemporary art curator. Both a curatorial collective and an itinerant site for art, they experiment with unconventional platforms to mobilize new interactions between art, place and audiences. Previous collaborations include the 2013 exhibition of Lawrence Weiner’s As Long As It Lasts on the facade of the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) on Queen Street West, Toronto.
