Gareth Long and Derek Sullivan's Dictionary of Received Ideas

Artists
Derek Sullivan and Gareth Long

This Friday afternoon at Art Metropole, Gareth Long and Derek Sullivan will work on their on-going project to illustrate and translate Flaubert’s Dictionary of Received Ideas. Using an iteration of Long’s Bouvard and Pécuchet’s Invented Desk For Copying, a desk-sculpture pulled from the unfinished pages of Gustave Flaubert’s incomplete last novel, the two artists will continue to illustrate entries in Flaubert’s posthumously published satirical dictionary.

This is the tenth of Long and Sullivan’s illustrating sessions to date, which have included public drawing sessions at Printed Matter and Kate Werble Gallery in New York, Smack Mellon in Brooklyn, Mercer Union and Jessica Bradley Art + Projects in Toronto, and PS1 Contemporary Art Center in Queens.

Derek Sullivan was born in 1976 in Richmond Hill, Ontario. He received a BFA from York University and an MFA from the University of Guelph. His multiple National Gallery Catalogue 2004 was included in the exhibition Art Metropole The Top 100 at the National Gallery of Canada (2007). Recently his work was featured in the group exhibitions We Can Do This Now at The Power Plant in Toronto (2007) and Gasoline Rainbows at the Contemporary Art Gallery in Vancouver (2007). He is represented by Jessica Bradley Art + Projects, Toronto.

Gareth Long (b. 1979. Lives and works in Toronto, Canada)

Long’s work centres on processes of transference, translation and collaboration as a means to question authorship and the mechanisms of cultural and knowledge production. In much of his previous work, he has explored the cross-translation of artistic forms, non-linear narrative tropes and gestures de-stabilizing medium specificity. Frequently, these explorations lead to a revised understanding of Modernism as it relates to artistic and literary traditions and the history of design, particularly book publishing.

Gareth Long was born in Toronto, Canada. He holds a BA in Visual Studies and Classical Civilizations from the University of Toronto and an MFA from Yale University. Long has held solo exhibitions at Oakville Galleries; Leo Kamen Gallery, Toronto; The Southern Alberta Art Gallery, Lethbridge; Kate Werble Gallery, New York; Michael Benevento, Los Angeles; and Torri, Paris. His work has been shown at various institutions including the Badischer Kunstverein, Karlsruhe; the Musée d’Art Contemporain de Montréal; Montréal; Mercer Union Centre for Contemporary Art, Toronto; Flat Time House, London; Wiels, Brussels; Witte de With, Rotterdam; Artists Space, New York; Casey Kaplan Gallery, New York; and MoMA PS1, New York.
