Art Metropole

Daniel Barrow is a draftsperson who works in video, performance and installation. He is best known for his intricate, live, manual animations on overhead projectors, which deal with themes of fantasy, empathy, isolation and queerness. A graduate of the University of Manitoba in 1995, Barrow began experimenting with overhead projectors after appreciating the lecture style of one of his professors. An important early overhead-projector work was 2002’s The Face of Everything, inspired by the bizarre story of Liberace’s long-time partner. Every Time I See Your Picture I Cry, from 2008, was a breakthrough work; Barrow toured it internationally through 2011. In 2010, Barrow won the Sobey Art Award, and earlier that year he opened Emotional Feelings at Toronto’s Art Gallery of York University. Barrow has performed internationally at venues such as PS1, the Walker Art Center and the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art.

aceartinc. is an Artist Run Centre dedicated to the development, exhibition and dissemination of contemporary art by cultural producers. aceartinc. maintains a commitment to emerging artists and recognizes its role in placing contemporary artists in a larger cultural context. aceartinc. is dedicated to cultural diversity in its programming and to this end encourages applications from all contemporary artists and curators including those identifying as members of GLBT (gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered), Aboriginal (status, non-status, Inuit and Metis) and all other culturally diverse communities.

Objectives:

Space: To maintain a physical space for the public where exploration of the ideas and materials of contemporary art are facilitated through exhibition, events, critical writing, and dialogue.

Art: To support the emergence, development, production and exhibition ofcontemporary art by local and national artists at all levels, with a focus on emerging artists.

Professional Development: To provide concrete opportunities for the professional development of artists, writers, curators, gallery workers, volunteers and members.

Resources: To facilitate artistic research and development by making available the resources, library and archives of the centre.

Dissemination: To communicate activities and programs locally, nationally and internationally through press release, invitation, and dissemination of educational and critical materials.

Dialogue: To provide a forum for dialogue and new ideas in contemporary art.

Peer Adjudication: To commit to prioritizing the peer adjudication process for gallery programming.

Community Relations: To ensure a strong connection with the Winnipeg Arts community through our willingness to partner with individuals, groups and other organizations.
