To Bring the World into the World, curated by Biljana Ciric, presents the practices of artist collectives, institutions and individual artists working across the South East Asia region and China with a special focus on video, its archiving processes, its presentation, preservation and distribution, as well as its use as a medium to reveal neglected histories, different realities and missed contact points.
The publication component of the project at Art Metropole will introduce recent initiatives in the South East Asia region. Artists´ independent journals and research based publishing projects that act as important platforms for the development of local knowledge and discourse, will be spread all over AM´s shop, including: SentAp magazine, Narratives in Malaysian Art: Imagining Identities (Volume 1), Past Peripheral: Curation in South East Asia, Studio Bibliotheque, among others.

The video exhibition component of To Bring the World into the World will run concurrently at Interaccess Electronic Media Arts Centre, 9 Ossington Avenue, Toronto.

Biljana Ciric will be present to launch Institution for the Future, an archive of ideas bringing together reflections by artists, curators and other cultural workers on what an institution for the future should and needs to look like.
Biljana Ciric (China) is a Serbian, Shanghai-based independent curator visiting Toronto for a two-week residency with Gendai. She was formerly the director of the Curatorial Department at the Shanghai Duolun Museum of Modern Art and the China networking curator for the 2006 Singapore Biennale. Her ongoing project Migration Addicts was presented at the 52nd Venice Biennale’s (2007) Collateral Events and in the Shenzhen/Hong Kong Bi-city Biennale of Urbanism and Architecture. Her exhibition projects include Strategies from Within—Contemporary Art Practices in Vietnam and Cambodia at Ke Center of Contemporary Arts (Shanghai) and a major retrospective of Yoko Ono at the Ke Center and Guangdong Museum of Art (Guangzhou), among many others. Recent projects include Contemporaneity—Contemporary Art of Indonesia (2010), which was presented at MoCA (Shanghai) and Body as a Museum at Tensta Konsthall (Stockholm). Institution for the Future (2011) at the Asia Triennial (Manchester) showcased artists’ collectives and small, independent, para-institutions from various Asian countries actively engaged with their local arts scenes and who contribute to the development of an arts infrastructure in their regions.
