Publication is a social space. Through expanded conversation around artist publishing, Art Metropole aims to provide incentive for readers, ultimately creating new formats for the sharing of ideas, materials, and knowledge. For the Toronto Art Book Fair, AM has selected a series of multiples, prints, zines, and audio works that encourage participation around and through their format. AM’s booth will occupy the display, which will also feature gastronomic editions, listening stations, areas for reading and resting, and more.

How Objects Condition Relations

Please join us on the Saturday of the fair at 4pm for a panel discussion with artists featured in the exhibition, hosted by AM’s curator, Nasrin Himada. This panel will focus on the theme of the artist multiple, in particular, exploring the ways in which objects condition participatory and social spaces.

Participating panelists:

Tsēma Igharas

Tsēma Igharas is an interdisciplinary artist and member of the Tahltan First Nation. She studied Northwest Coast Formline Design at K’saan (2005/06), has a BFA from ECUAD (2011) and MFA from OCADu (2016). Tsēma has shown in notable group shows Interweavings for emerging First Nations artists who have previously won a YVR Art Foundation scholarship (RAG 2014/15), Culture Shift, Contemporary Indigenous Art Biennale in Montreal and has shown her solo exhibit, Ore Body at Gallery 44 for Imaginative Film Festival (Toronto 2016). Tsēma graduated from the Interdisciplinary Master’s in Art, Media and Design program at OCADu showing her thesis work, LAND|MINE that connects materials to mine sites and bodies to the land.

Basil AlZeri

Basil AlZeri is a visual artist living and working in Toronto, Canada. AlZeri’s practice involves the intersection of art, education, and food, taking multiple forms, such as performance, interventions, gallery and public installation. AlZeri’s work examines the socio-political dynamics of the family and its intersection with cultural practices, drawing on the necessities of everyday life and the visibility of labour as sites of exploration. His work aims to facilitate a space for empathy through gestures of inclusivity and generosity. AlZeri’s work has been shown in Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Sackville, Regina, Vancouver, Mexico City, Santiago, and Tartu/Estonia. AlZeri was one of the artists in residence at the Art Gallery of Ontario (Song Dong Communal Courtyard Project) in 2016, and attended the (Un)Settled Project Residency at the Guild in Toronto in 2017.

Myung-Sun Kim

Myung-Sun Kim is an artist and a programmer based in Toronto. Her recent collaboration with Lisa Myers for the Gendai Kitchen project explores ideas around foodways, undocumented history, war, fiction, memory, and resilience. She is interested in sharing of lived experiences and methodologies that may evoke a collective sense of empathy and community care, in ways that provides sustenance. She is the Manager of Artist & Community Activation at The Theatre Centre. She has upcoming exhibitions in 2017 at the Art Gallery of Ontario (Toronto, ON) and at articule (Montreal, QC) in 2017.

Lisa Myers

Lisa Myers is an independent curator and artist with a keen interest in interdisciplinary collaboration. Myers has a Master of Fine Arts in Criticism and Curatorial practice from OCAD University. Her recent work involves printmaking, stop-motion animation and performance. Since 2010 she has worked with anthocyanin pigment from blueberries in printmaking, and stop-motion animation. Her participatory performances involve sharing berries and other food items in social gatherings reflecting on the value found in place and displacement; and processes of straining and absorbing. She has exhibited her work in solo and group exhibitions in venues including Urban Shaman (Winnipeg), Art Gallery of Peterborough and the Art Gallery of Ontario. Her writing has been published in a number of exhibition publications in addition to the journal Senses and Society, C Magazine and FUSE Magazine. She is currently an Assistant Lecturer in the Faculty of Environmental Studies at York University. Myers is a member of Beausoleil First Nation and she is based in Port Severn and Toronto, Ontario.
