Art Metropole at Art Basel 2022

Art Metropole is pleased to announce its participation at Art Basel 2022, marking the 46th anniversary of its participation at the fair.

This year Art Metropole’s booth features new publications and editions by Canadian and international artists and publishers, including Jason Baerg, Nour Bishouty, Cassandra Cassandra, Simon Fuh, Gravitron, Julian Yi-Zhong Hou, Vanessa Maltese, José Andrés Mora, New Documents, Postcommodity, Derek Sullivan, and Andrew Zealley. Recent co-published books with the Toronto Biennial of Art, Water, Kinship Belief, and Jumblies Theatre, Talking Treaties Collective’s A Treaty Guide for Torontonians are also featured. The presentation is accompanied by important and rare publications and editions by AA Bronson & General Idea, Stan Douglas, Barbara Ess, Andrea Fraser, Dan Graham, Jenny Holzer, Garry Neill Kennedy, Lucy Lippard, Jonathan Monk, Yoko Ono, Michael Snow, Ron Terada, Lawrence Weiner, and many others.

On the occasion of the fair, Art Metropole is thrilled to launch a new edition by Joi T. Arcand, titled niya-nikāwiy-nōhkom-nicāpān-nitāniskotāpān. The work is realized in a spiraling reflective vinyl, whose Nēhiyawēwin (Plains Cree) syllabics translate as “me-my mother-my grandmother-my great grandmother-my great-great grandmother”. Arcand writes, “the word for great grandmother conveys the idea of connection or lifelines – with the younger generations being steered and pulled with teachings and lifelong values”.

Art Metropole (est. 1974) is a non-profit artist run organization with a mandate to produce and support artist-initiated publication in any media, especially innovative formats predisposed to sharing and circulation.
